Birbhum DM leads midnight crackdown on Illegal sand mining in Nanoor

Birbhum, 13 August (H.S.): Birbhum district administration led by District Magistrate Bidhan Roy launched a campaign against illegal mining in Palitpur Pratappur Chowk area of Nanoor late on Tuesday night. Allegedly, sand was being extracted by cutting the embankment of the Ajay river in the Notunhat area adjacent to the Ajay Bridge (Lochandas Bridge) and using suction pipes. More than 15 dumpers, four mining machines and two suction machines mounted on boats have been seized in the operation.

According to local sources, despite such illegal sand mining in the Ajay river for a long time, no action was being taken by the Nanoor police station or the block administration. Meanwhile, the District Magistrate decided to run the operation himself late Tuesday night and it was successful.

According to sources in the administration, the District Magistrate has reprimanded the BDO of Nanoor, the OC of the concerned police station and the BL&LRO for gross negligence in monitoring the incident.
