Sexual harassment allegations at Howrah's Narasingha College: TMCP Leader Souvik Roy served show-cause notice by TMC

Howrah, 9 July (H.S.): In a major embarrassment for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the party has issued a show-cause notice to Souvik Roy, the state joint secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), following serious allegations of sexual harassment at Narasingha College in Howrah.

Roy is accused of forcing students into obscene acts and allegedly recording those acts on camera. Allegedly, he pressured students to remove their pants and expose their private parts under the guise of ragging. Disturbingly, these acts were reportedly filmed and stored for unknown purposes.

In response, the TMC has taken preliminary disciplinary action by asking Souvik Roy to submit a written explanation by July 13. Party insiders have indicated that if his response is unsatisfactory, strict disciplinary measures will follow.

Till the time of filing of the news, Roy has not issued any public statement on the matter. Meanwhile, both the party and the college authorities are conducting internal investigations.

Reacting to the incident, BJP spokesperson Om Prakash Singh told Hindusthan Samachar on Wednesday, “If a proper investigation is conducted across Bengal, similar cases will emerge from every college. TMCP leaders have been consistently involved in exploiting young students. The student wing of TMC has two main agendas—extortion and hooliganism.”
