Scattered unrest in Bengal amid left-backed nationwide strike


West Bengal, 9 July (H.S.): West Bengal witnessed scattered incidents of unrest on Tuesday morning as Left workers and supporters took to the streets in support of a nationwide strike called by 10 central trade unions. Protesters attempted to disrupt public life in several areas by blocking railway tracks and staging road blockades.

Rail blockades were witnessed at several locations on Sealdah Main Line, including Belgharia, Barrackpore, and Shyamnagar stations in North 24 Parganas. Early morning commuters, including office-goers, faced problems as several trains were brought to a standstill due to the protest. Attempts to disrupt train services were also reported on Sealdah South Section, including at Jadavpur station, where railway police dispersed the agitators.

In Howrah's Domjur area, the police were forced to resort to lathi-charge to disperse bandh supporters who had blocked roads. Similar incidents were reported from Haldia too.

The strike saw had mixed impact in South Bengal , including Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, Haldia, Asansol, and Durgapur districts.

In Asansol, a clash erupted between supporters of the Left and Trinamool supported trade union INTTUC. A bandh supporter lay down on the road and was injured after a tractor allegedly ran over his leg. He was immediately taken to the district hospital for treatment.

In North Bengal, the overall impact of the bandh remained limited, with rail and bus services operating lnormal across the region.
