Nagpur, 09 July (HS):
As heavy rains lashed Nagpur through Tuesday night and Wednesday morning,
several parts of the city plunged into crisis, with flooded homes and blocked
roads. Rescue operations are underway in several parts of the city.
A rescue operation is
underway in Narasala, near the cremation ground, where several people were
reportedly trapped in rising floodwaters. The Nagpur Fire Department has
deployed teams with rescue boats and safety gear, working relentlessly to bring
people to safety.
Authorities have
appealed to residents in low-lying areas to stay indoors and avoid flooded
streets. Emergency helplines have been activated, and NMC’s disaster response
teams remain on high alert.
Schools, colleges closed: The District Collector declared a holiday for
schools and colleges following heavy rains and forecast of very heavy rains by
the Met Office.
Railway tracks submerged: Flooding
at Nagpur Railway Station, left platforms waterlogged, and train tracks
submerged under knee-deep water. The deluge brought several key services to a
halt, creating chaos for thousands of passengers.
Stagnant water is pooling across the tracks and platform areas, with water reaching up to the
base of halted trains. Commuters struggled to navigate the waterlogged
premises, while railway authorities rushed to manage the situation.
Officials from
Central Railway confirmed that multiple trains were delayed or diverted due to
track inundation. Emergency pumping operations were launched, and inspection
teams are currently assessing potential electrical and signalling hazards.
Railway authorities
have urged passengers to check real-time updates on train schedules before
arriving at the station. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD)
forecasting more rain in the coming days, officials are on high alert.
Rivers Overflowing, Roads Blocked: The Chandrabhaga River near Brahmapuri village
and the Kolar River near Patansaongi have both overflowed, flooding bridges on
the Dhapewada–Patansaongi state highway.
With water flowing dangerously
over bridges on both rivers, authorities have immediately suspended traffic in
both directions, leaving several villages temporarily cut off.
Local administration
has issued alerts urging motorists to avoid the route and seek safer
alternatives. Residents in nearby low-lying areas have also been asked to
remain on high alert as water levels continue to rise due to upstream inflows.
The critical road for goods transport between Hingna and Kalmeshwar now lies submerged. The road connected two major industrial areas.
With more rainfall forecast in the next 24 hours, the local administration is on high alert.
