Kolkata, 9 July (H.S.):
Amid ongoing outrage over the alleged gang rape involving TMCP leader Manojit Mishra at a South Kolkata law college, fresh allegations of intimidation and misconduct have emerged against another student leader from the same political outfit. Sanjay Chaudhuri, a TMCP leader said to be close to Mishra, is facing serious accusations of creating a climate of fear and disorder at the Gariahat ITI College.
Despite having reportedly graduated from the college nearly a decade ago, Sanjay is said to maintain an active and dominant presence on campus. According to local residents, he has turned the college premises into a base for loud, unruly celebrations, often organizing birthday parties for student leaders using high-volume DJ music inside the college union room late into the night.
Residents claim they have submitted multiple written complaints to the college administration, but no action has been taken so far. Students have also expressed distress over Sanjay’s behaviour and the activities of his associates, though many are reportedly too afraid to speak out publicly.
Allegations against Sanjay include consumption of alcohol on campus, creating disturbances with loud music during nighttime hours, extorting money from students in exchange for boosting attendance records, and demanding payment under the guise of helping with admissions.
Disturbingly, Sanjay's name also surfaced in connection with the July 2023 death of a young woman in a road accident in Topsia. Witnesses claim he was the last person seen with her before the fatal incident. A formal complaint had been lodged at the Bhowanipore police station regarding the matter.
When approached, the college administration declined to comment. An official cited recent transfer into the post as the reason for lack of awareness about the situation.
Meanwhile, TMCP state president Trinankur Bhattacharya dismissed the allegations as baseless rumours and challenged anyone with credible evidence to file a formal complaint with the police.
