New Delhi, July 31 (H.S.): After President Trump's decision to impose a 25% tariff on India, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Modi government for its silence and inaction. He pointed out that while Trump previously mentioned a ceasefire, Modi did not respond in Parliament.
Kharge emphasized that the tariffs would adversely impact India’s economy, affecting trade, MSMEs, and farmers, leading to significant industry losses. Despite the Modi government's ministers discussing a trade deal with the U.S., India is suffering due to these penalties. Kharge questioned whether Trump’s actions were a reward for Modi's prior gestures, linking the tariffs to India's ties with Russia and membership in BRICS.
He reaffirmed India's commitment to a non-aligned foreign policy, contrasting it with the past achievements of the UPA government under Dr. Manmohan Singh, who secured favorable international agreements without unilateral pressure.
