Calcutta, 26 July (H.S.): The University of Calcutta has scheduled a postgraduate examination on August 28 at 2 PM, coinciding with the Foundation Day of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The timing has triggered a sharp reaction from the student wing of the ruling party, which has accused the university administration of playing into a political conspiracy directed by Delhi.
TMCP’s state president strongly criticized the university’s decision, calling it an unprecedented political maneuver and alleging that it was a deliberate attempt to interfere with the democratic rights of students.
Responding to the controversy, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, Dr. Shanta Dutta De said,
“Appearing for examinations is a student’s duty, and it does not infringe upon anyone’s democratic rights. If we begin scheduling exams around political events of various organizations, then we would have to cater to every political party’s calendar. That, in itself, would be undemocratic.”
TMCP continues to view the move as politically motivated. The standoff between the student body and the university administration may escalate in the coming days.
