Delhi, 26 July (H.S.): The Maldives will commemorate its 60th independence anniversary on Saturday , with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending as the 'Guest of Honour.' His visit is intended to strengthen bilateral and defense ties between India and the Maldives. Upon arrival in Malé on Friday, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome, which included a Guard of Honour and a 21-gun salute at Republic Square. Accompanied by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, the event featured national anthems and a dance performance by children, with PM Modi's portrait prominently displayed on the Ministry of Defence building, illustrating the significance of the occasion.
During a joint press conference, President Muizzu announced the start of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (IMFTA) between the two nations, highlighting a commitment to enhance bilateral relations. PM Modi and President Muizzu held extensive discussions centered on cooperation in trade, defense, and infrastructure, marking a positive shift in relations after earlier tensions.
India has extended a Line of Credit (LoC) of ₹4,850 crores to the Maldives while also reducing the debt repayment obligations related to government-funded LoCs.
