Guwahati, 26 July (HS): Kargil Vijay Diwas was celebrated with reverence and pride across the country on Saturday in memory of India's historic victory in the Kargil war. In the year 1999, under 'Operation Vijay', the Indian Army restored the sanctity of the Line of Control by driving away Pakistani intruders.
On this occasion, a wreath-laying and tribute ceremony was organized by the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam at the State War Memorial in Dighalipukhuri, Guwahati.
Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya attended the ceremony as the chief guest. He was honored with a 'Baggle Welcome' as per military tradition, General Salute by the NCC Guard and the National Anthem. After this, 'Present Arms' was given to Amar Jawan and wreaths were offered in memory of the brave martyrs.
On behalf of the Chief Minister, Brigadier Polash Choudhury (Retd), Director, Sainik Welfare, Assam and a brave warrior of the Kargil war offered wreaths. Representatives of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force also paid tributes to the martyrs.
Former military officers Brigadier Ranjit Barthakur (retd.), Commodore KC Choudhury (retd.) and Group Captain Debananda Gohain (retd.) also paid floral tributes on behalf of their respective forces.
Besides, ex-servicemen, Veer Naris, Veer Mothers and family members of the soldiers martyred in the Kargil war also paid emotional tributes. On this occasion, former Commanding Officer of 18 Grenadiers Colonel Dilip Kumar Bohra (retd.) shared his war experiences and recalled emotional moments.
Veer Naris and Veer Maas were specially felicitated during the ceremony. Lieutenant General RP Kalita (retd.) and Lieutenant General PK Bharali (retd.) addressed the occasion and recalled the unparalleled bravery and indomitable courage of the Indian soldiers during the Kargil war.
Governor Acharya in his keynote address expressed profound gratitude towards the sacrifice, patriotism and dedication of the Indian Army.
In the event, NCC cadets and students of Army School Narengi ignited the spirit of patriotism through patriotic songs, speeches and short plays.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is not only a tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the security of the country but also brings alive the immortal saga of their bravery and patriotism.
