Kolkata, 25 July (H.S.): As West Bengal gears up for the upcoming assembly elections, a key affiliate of the Trinamool Congress has initiated a new approach to candidate selection by seeking direct input from the public. In addition to common citizens, grassroots TMC leaders and workers are also being asked to cast their votes on who they believe should be nominated from their respective constituencies. This method has sparked considerable commotion within party.
Sources reveal that some hopeful leaders are already attempting to influence the local workers and residents in their favor. In certain cases, leaders are reportedly instructing supporters to say, “If anyone asks, just mention my name.” However, representatives from the affiliated organization are not easily swayed. Upon hearing praise for any particular leader, they are digging deeper to verify facts, which in some cases is exposing hidden truths.
The performance of current MLAs is also under close scrutiny. According to insiders, some sitting legislators have failed to meet expectations, prompting a search for fresh faces in those constituencies.
Most of the constituencies have at least two to three contenders, while some have even more.
A senior TMC leader commented, “Earlier, getting a ticket was largely a matter of luck. Now, it's all about merit. The organization is leaving no stone unturned in evaluating candidates from all angles.” He also noted that in the last election, some unexpected candidates were nominated who may have won but failed to deliver as legislators. Interestingly, while their political performance was poor, their personal growth seemed to flourish. Such individuals are likely to be sidelined this time.
Some block-level leaders have already assumed they will be the next candidates. This assumption has begun to reflect in their lifestyle with expensive branded clothes, shoes, salon visits, and increased outreach to party workers.
Party insiders indicate that this year’s candidate list will likely contain surprises. While some aspirants may face disappointment, others who never expected a nomination might find themselves lucky due to their competence. The affiliated body has made it clear that no amount of lobbying or recommendations — even from senior leaders — will influence the selection. Attempting to sway the decision-making process is futile.
TMC leader Debu Tudu said, “Whoever becomes the candidate will be decided by the party leadership. We have no knowledge in this matter.”
