New Delhi, July 25(HS): The Supreme Court has extended the stay on the proceedings in the Lucknow trial court regarding Rahul Gandhi's comments about Savarkar until further notice. Justice Dipankar Datta announced that the hearing on Gandhi's petition will occur in four weeks. Previously, on April 25, the court expressed that no one should speak irresponsibly about freedom fighters, highlighting their role in India's freedom struggle.
Justice Datta cautioned Gandhi against making similar statements again, warning of potential action. The Supreme Court had earlier stayed the criminal defamation case against Gandhi and the summons from the lower court.
During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi referred to Savarkar as a British servant and mentioned his pension from the British. Justice Datta questioned the treatment of freedom fighters and referenced past letters from Gandhi's family praising Savarkar, emphasizing the need for respect towards such figures.
