‘Sarpamitra’ to get identity cards, Rs 10 lakh insurance


Nagpur, 25 July (HS): The State Government has announced that the Snake Rescuers (Sarpamitra) will be issued official identity cards and will be provided with an insurance cover worth Rs 10 lakh. This is an important step towards recognising their services. The announcement was made by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule during a review meeting in Mumbai. He took cognizance of the long-pending demand by the Sarpamitra.These rescuers often risk their lives to safely remove snakes from human habitats. Bawankule said that this is the time to recognise their contribution. A comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be drafted and introduced for effective implementation of the insurance scheme.

A proposal will be submitted to the Chief Minister to recognise the Sarpamitra as essential service providers, and the status of Frontline Workers, Bawankule said.
