Kolkata, 25 July (H.S.) –Heavy overnight rainfall wreaked havoc across several parts of Kolkata, causing structural damage, uprooting trees, and leading to widespread waterlogging. Though no casualties were reported, the incidents sparked concern among residents, especially those living in old and dilapidated buildings.

In the early hours of Friday, a portion of an old building in the Bowbazar area collapsed due to relentless rain. The debris fell on a nearby makeshift shop built along the footpath, damaging the structure. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

A similar collapse was reported in the Girish Park area, where a section of another building, already declared unsafe by authorities, gave way. Again, no injuries were reported.

In a separate incident, a large tree was uprooted and fell near the Maidan area close to Fort William. The Kolkata Police responded promptly, clearing the tree from the road to ensure that traffic movement was not disrupted.

Several areas in the city experienced waterlogging as a result of the continuous downpour. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation deployed pumping machines to drain out the accumulated water. Officials confirmed that the situation had improved in many affected areas and that efforts were ongoing to restore normalcy.

The rain-triggered incidents have heightened anxiety among residents, particularly those living in aging and structurally weak buildings. Authorities have assured that they are closely monitoring the situation and have taken necessary measures to address any further risks.
