New Delhi, July 24(HS):A bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai declined to hear a petition claiming inadequate relief for 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy victims and advised petitioners to approach the High Court. The petitioners argued that severely injured individuals were labeled with temporary disabilities, leading to lesser compensation. The court questioned their expertise regarding victim classification.

The gas leak from Union Carbide on December 2–3, 1984, killed over three thousand and affected more than a hundred thousand. A total of ₹715 crore was awarded in compensation during the 1989 settlement. In 2010, a curative petition for additional compensation was filed, and seven Union Carbide officials received prison sentences.
