Delhi, 25 July(HS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Malé, Maldives, on Friday, marked by a Guard of Honour and a 21-gun salute at Republic Square. Accompanied by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, the welcome included the national anthems of both nations and a celebratory dance performance by children. Notably, a large portrait of PM Modi adorned the Ministry of Defence building, emphasizing the significance of the visit.

During the joint press conference, President Muizzu announced the initiation of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (IMFTA) between India and Maldives, highlighting the commitment to strengthen bilateral ties. Prime Minister Modi engaged in extensive discussions with President Muizzu, focusing on cooperation in trade, defence, and infrastructure, signaling a positive shift in relations following previous tensions.

India extended a Line of Credit (LoC) of ₹4,850 crores to Maldives and reduced the debt repayment obligations associated with government-funded LoCs. Both leaders expressed the intent to finalize a bilateral investment treaty, reinforcing India's status as a trusted ally of the Maldives. PM Modi emphasized that friendship is paramount for India in its relationship with the Maldives, noting the historical roots of their diplomatic ties that span 60 years, symbolized through the release of commemorative stamps featuring traditional boats from both countries.

In addition, PM Modi affirmed India's commitment to enhancing Maldives' defence capabilities and announced a $565 million line of credit to support infrastructure and development initiatives. He proposed working on a bilateral investment treaty and initiating a Free Trade Agreement, emphasizing the transformation of paperwork into prosperity. PM Modi also introduced a local currency settlement system to facilitate direct trade between the Indian Rupee and Maldivian Rufiyaa, aiming to strengthen economic ties.

The Prime Minister remarked on the growing momentum of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Maldives, predicting benefits in tourism and retail sectors due to improved financial connectivity. He reiterated the depth of the India-Maldives relationship, stating that their friendship is “older than history and as deep as the sea,” which establishes both nations as “co-passengers” rather than mere neighbors.

The day concluded with PM Modi receiving the Haiykolhu, a traditional gesture of respect from the Maldives National Defence Force. His remarks underscored the strong foundation of cooperation and friendship between India and Maldives, emphasizing that this partnership will continue to thrive and expand in various sectors for mutual benefit. The visit marked an important step

reaffirming and rejuvenating ties between the two countries, paving the way for ongoing collaboration in the future.

PM Modi and President Muizzu launched a commemorative stamp celebrating 60 years of India-Maldives diplomatic ties, featuring 'Uru' from Kerala and 'Vadhu Dhoni' from Maldives, symbolizing their enduring maritime connection.

In a post on X,PM wrote,Held very fruitful discussions with President Muizzu. Maldives is at the core of our ‘Neighbourhood First’ and Mahasagar Vision. Our discussion covered several sectors, notably commercial and cultural linkages. We both agree that the India-Maldives friendship will always be bright and clear.

PM Modi and President Muizzu inaugurated the Ministry of Defence building in Malé, highlighting strong India-Maldives cooperation. They acknowledged climate change challenges and committed to sustainability.

In a series of post ,PM Modi President Muizzu and I inaugurated a new building of the Ministry of Defence in Malé. This is yet another instance of strong India-Maldives cooperation.

Together, they planted saplings under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, supporting the Maldives Government's pledge for 5 million tree plantations.

In a seperate post on x,PM Modi wrote,India and the Maldives fully understand the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation. And, we are committed to doing everything possible to boost sustainability.

This evening in Malé, President Muizzu and I planted saplings, strengthening ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (a tree for Mother) initiative and Pledge of 5 million Tree Plantation of the Maldives Government.
