Delhi, 24 July (H.S.): The Lok Sabha was adjourned within minutes of reconvening due to ongoing Opposition protests, continuing a pattern seen throughout the first three days of the session. Protests are centered around demands for discussions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and issues related to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor.
The Rajya Sabha's Business Advisory Committee has agreed to a 16-hour discussion on these topics next week. Meanwhile, key legislation, including the Scheduled Tribes Reservation bill for Goa and the Merchant Shipping Bill, awaits consideration as the impasse continues. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is set to present the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024, for consideration and passage.
Opposition members expressed dissatisfaction over the government's refusal to discuss the SIR of electoral rolls. Speaker Om Birla criticized the use of placards and disruptive behavior as unseemly and a waste of public funds, leading to the adjournment of the house until 2 p.m.
In the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan denied notices for special discussions, urging members to respect the proceedings. The Rajya Sabha also bid farewell to retiring members,M. Mohamed Abdulla, N. Chandrasegharan, M. Shanmugam, Vaiko, P. Wilson
highlighting their valuable contributions to the House. Both houses adjourned to reconvene at 2 p.m.
