Guwahati, 3 June (HS ): With the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon, Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday took the reins of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), marking a fresh chapter for the state's opposition party.
At the state Congress headquarters in Guwahati, a ceremonial handover from outgoing President Bhupen Kumar Borah- who helmed the post for over three years- signaled the leadership change. The event witnessed the presence of senior party figures including AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh and Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia.
Earlier in the day, Gogoi visited the Kamakhya Temple to seek divine blessings before stepping into his new political role.
Guided by the principles of inclusiveness and equality and inspired by leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, Hiteswar Saikia, and my father, Tarun Gogoi, I’m determined to steer the party forward, he declared during a press briefing shortly after assuming charge.
The Lok Sabha MP’s elevation comes amid political tensions, with recent barbs from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over alleged ties between Gogoi’s British spouse and Pakistan’s ISI- allegations he has unequivocally dismissed.
Notably, Gogoi’s ascent was preceded by a three-day padayatra from Sivasagar to Guwahati, making strategic stops in Titabor, Jorhat, Nagon, Morigaon, and Jagiroad. At each juncture, local workers and supporters rallied behind him, reinforcing his image as a mass connector.
Now at the helm, Gogoi is expected to galvanize party machinery and strategize for a competitive showing in the 2026 polls- a test of both leadership and legacy.
