Lucknow, 13 June (HS): UP Power
Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has shown a significant decrease in transformer
damage amid the present extreme heatwave in the state. Compared to prior years,
fewer transformers were damaged in April and May of 2025-26, indicating a
reinforced power distribution system and enhanced repair and maintenance
processes. According to UPPCL Chairman Dr. Ashish Kumar Goyal, just 12 power
transformers were damaged during April and May 2025-26, compared to 42 in
2024-25, 61 in 2023-24, and 90 in 2022-23. This shows a tremendous decline of
more than 87% in three years. Similarly, damage to common transformers has dropped
significantly. While 7,322 transformers failed between April and May 2022-23,
the number fell to 4,906 in 2023-24, 3,801 in 2024-25, and 2,613 in the same
period in 2025-26—a fall of more than 64 percent.
Transformer blowouts, which were
formerly a common concern throughout the summer and monsoon seasons, are
quickly becoming a thing of the past. In the larger context, 34,350
transformers were damaged between 2022 and 2023. This figure fell to 33,595 in
2024-25 and even lower to 31,580 in just the first two months of 2025-26, a
total of 2,015 less than the previous year. This development is the consequence
of several tangible efforts led by UPPCL. Power transformers were outfitted
with bell protection devices, whereas distribution transformers used tailless
and fuse units. Mechanical fault tracking and continuous monitoring systems
were established, as well as thorough maintenance routine evaluations, to
assure optimal performance and dependability.
Officers who were responsible for
numerous transformer failures were subjected to rigorous disciplinary action,
including many executive engineers, senior divisional officers (SDOs), and
junior engineers. Dr. Goyal highlighted that Uttar Pradesh has a zero-tolerance
attitude regarding electricity supply. If interruptions occur due to
carelessness at any level, prompt and harsh action will be taken. He has asked
authorities to ensure that if a transformer of 100 kV or above is destroyed,
culpability is established and action is done immediately.
Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister, has prioritized ensuring excellent
electricity supply 24 x 7. He had previously directed UPPCL to address
recurring concerns, such as transformer blowouts, aggressively. Under Dr.
Goyal's guidance, this instruction is already generating actual results,
providing genuine benefits to the people of the state.
