Malda, 13 June (H.S.) -In a significant breakthrough, vigilant troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) foiled a major smuggling attempt and recovered counterfeit Indian currency with a face value of ₹5 lakh along the India-Bangladesh international border in West Bengal’s Malda district.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the 71 Battalion, stationed at the Shobhapur border outpost, under the South Bengal Frontier. Acting on prior intelligence, BSF jawans observed suspicious movements of three smugglers on the Bangladeshi side of the border at around 10:20 AM on June 12. The suspects approached the fencing and hurled a packet into Indian territory before retreating swiftly.
Reacting promptly, the alert BSF troops rushed to the site and informed nearby personnel and senior officers. Their swift action prevented any Indian-side collaborators from retrieving the packet. A search operation was immediately launched, and the area was cordoned off.
During the intensive search, BSF personnel recovered the suspicious packet. Upon opening it, they discovered 1,000 counterfeit Indian currency notes of ₹500 denomination, amounting to a total of ₹5,00,000.
The seized fake currency is being handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal proceedings.
Sharing details of the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the South Bengal Frontier stated that the BSF continues to achieve remarkable success in curbing cross-border smuggling and narcotics trafficking. He emphasized that it is the alertness, vigilance, and rapid response of BSF personnel that consistently thwarts such illicit activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
