Erosion in Bhagirathi

East Burdwan, 1 June (H.S): Erosion has started again in Bhagirathi river in Kishoriganj area of Nasratpur Panchayat East Burdwan district. The river is swallowing agricultural land one after the other and soon people of coastal areas will lose their homes due to erosion. Kishoriganj village of Nasratpur Panchayat of Purbasthali-1 block of Nadanghat police station is situated on the other side of Bhagirathi river. Despite being connected to Nadia district by land, the village's school, market and mandis are all in Samudragarh area across Bhagirathi river.

The main livelihood of the village is agriculture. Agricultural products have to be brought to Neemtala Kisan Mandi across the river for marketing. The village situated on the banks of Bhagirathi river has been in the grip of river erosion for many years. Recently a delegation inspected the river erosion. But till now no steps have been taken to provide relief to the villagers. Nasratpur Panchayat's Deputy Mukhiya Mobin Hussain Mandal said, In the past also a lot of land has gone into the river due to Bhagirathi erosion in Kishoriganj. Recently, due to the increase in the river water, erosion has happened again. Since Friday, erosion has increased a lot.

This information has been given to the BDO and Panchayat Samiti. BDO Sanjay Senapati said, The matter has been informed to the higher authorities. Sub-divisional Officer Shubham Agarwal said, A plan for the river embankment project worth about ₹2.5 crore has been sent. The green signal has not come yet. The matter has been informed to the district administration. It is being seen whether something can be done at the local level soon or not.
