Guwahati, 1 June (HS): Due to heavy rains for the last two days, there is a situation of severe floods and landslides in Northeast India. So far, more than 20 people have been officially confirmed dead in Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.

The Indian Meteorological Department has attributed this heavy rain to the low pressure formed over Bangladesh. Three people including women and children died in the landslide in Chapidang, Guwahati. At the same time, at least nine people are reported dead due to landslides in Arunachal Pradesh. Seven members of two families killed after a vehicle fell into a ditch on the Bana-Cheppa highway in East Kameng district.

Information has also come to light about the death of two people in a landslide near Lower Subansiri district. At the same time, due to a landslide on the Balipara-Charduwar-Tawang road in West Kameng, the connectivity of many villages was closed, leaving many passengers stranded.

Flash floods and landslides in Manipur have wreaked havoc in the hill districts - Senapati, Tamenglong, Nune and Pherzaul. A large part of Imphal East has been submerged due to the breach of the embankment of the Imphal river. The state administration said that at least 800 people, including women, children, elderly and others, have been evacuated from Imphal East and West districts.

The Indian Army and Assam Rifles rescued about 800 civilians from flood-affected areas of Manipur on Saturday under 'Operation Jalrahat'.

Heavy waterlogging occurred in Imphal on Saturday due to rain, bringing traffic to a halt on the roads and badly affecting normal life. The city and its surrounding low-lying areas were the worst affected.

The situation was no different in Mizoram. Four people have killed in the last 24 hours due to the devastating floods. According to the District Disaster Management Authority, three members of the same family killed in the flash floods in Champhai district, while another person lost his life in Serchhip. Landslides have damaged houses and roads in many districts. At the time of filing this report, one person is reported to be buried under the debris.

Mizoram Governor General VK Singh and Disaster Management Minister Professor Lalnilavama visited the affected areas and announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased. Relief and monitoring operations are going on across the state.
