Tamulpur (Assam), 1 June (HS): An elderly man lost his life in a wild elephant attack in Salbari village of Bagajuli in Tamulpur. The deceased has been identified as Suneshwar Brahma (75).
The elephant Datal, which came out alone from the herd of elephants, broke the fence of a person's house and started eating the paddy stored in the house. The elderly man tried to drive the elephant away by lighting a torch. Meanwhile, the elephant dragged a person named Suneshwar Brahma from inside the house and crushed him to death. The angry elephant was not satisfied with just crushing Brahma to death, but threw the bodies in a pond nearby.
This incident is said to have happened around 1 o'clock late at night. A herd of elephants entered the village amid rain. Meanwhile, due to the area being highly sensitive in terms of elephants, people are demanding that the government provide proper vehicles to the forest department as soon as possible. People say that due to lack of vehicles, the forest department team is unable to reach to drive away the elephants at night.
Residents of the area have expressed their displeasure towards the forest department people. There is an atmosphere of mourning in the entire area after the incident. As soon as the information was received, the forest department team reached the spot in the morning and sent the body for post-mortem.
