North 24 Parganas, 1 June (H.S.): An elderly couple's body was found hanging on Saturday night at Mahendranagar area under Ghola police station in Sodpur of North 24 Parganas district. There is confusion about the reasons for the couple's death. The family has said that the police should investigate and find out the truth.

According to family sources, the names of the deceased are Shekhar Samant and Manika Samant. They are residents of Mahendranagar. Shekhar Samant has retired from his job. His daughter lives outside. However, Shekhar's brother and his family used to visit the couple's house frequently. On Saturday night, Shekhar's nephew went to their house. Due to power cut in the area, the entire house was dark. The nephew turned on the flash of his mobile phone and first saw Manika Devi's body. He ran and informed the family members. When the rest of the family members reached, they saw Shekhar's body next to Manika Devi. On information, the police of Ghola police station reached the spot. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Shekhar Samant's brother Sunil Samant said, My father-in-law died a few days ago. We were busy there. On Saturday night, my son went to my elder brother's house. He saw his wife's body and told us. Later, our elder brother's body was also found in that house. I don't understand why this happened. Let the police investigate. People in the neighbourhood said that Shekhar Samant and his wife were of a very calm nature. They had no problems with anyone. They are shocked by the sudden death of such two people. There is doubt about whether it was suicide or murder. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
