NEW DELHI, 26 February (H.S.) : The Mahakumbh, which
started from January 13, is about to end. Meanwhile, climate activist has
written a letter to PM Modi. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has written an
open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he has expressed
apprehension that the next Mahakumbh to be held after 144 years may be
organized on sand, because by then the rivers may dry up. In a letter, Sonam
Wangchuk tried to draw Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attention to the rapid
melting of Himalayan glaciers, which are the source of many of India's rivers.
He has posted the same in his X handle also. Sonam Wangchuk warned, “As we all
know, the Himalayan glaciers are melting very fast and if this and
deforestation continue at this rate, then in a few decades our sacred rivers
like Ganga, Brahmaputra and Indus may become seasonal rivers. This may also
mean that the next Mahakumbh will be held on the sand remains of the holy river
itself.
Wangchuk suggested that
India should play a leading role in conserving its glaciers. India should
play a leading role in glacier conservation, because we have the Himalayas and
holy rivers like Ganga and Yamuna originate from them, he said in his
letter. The Ladakh-based environmentalist described himself as an admirer of
the Prime Minister's various environmental initiatives and urged him to set up
a commission to assess the condition of the Himalayan glaciers.
Wangchuk regretted that
there is very little awareness among the people on this issue at the grassroots
level. He also urged a group of people from Ladakh to meet Prime Minister Modi.
The United Nations has declared 2025 as the international year for the
conservation of glaciers.
