NEW DELHI, 22 February (H.S.) : After winning the Delhi

Assembly elections, 8 corporation councilors of BJP and 3 of Aam Aadmi Party

have resigned from their earlier posts.

The corporation councilors

who became MLAs in the Delhi Assembly elections 2025 have resigned from the

membership of the corporation. 11 corporation councilors have become MLAs in

the assembly elections, out them, 8 councilors are from BJP and 3 councilors

are from Aam Aadmi Party. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta herself was a councilor

from Shalimar Bagh ward and has been elected as MLA from this assembly

constituency. She has also resigned from the membership from her ward.

According to the rules, Delhi Election Commission will have to conduct

by-elections in all the vacant wards within six months.

A nominated councilor is

also included among the corporation councilors who left the membership of the

corporation. Overall, by-elections are to be held in 12 wards except for the

nominated corporation councilor. The Corporation Secretary's office says that

there is nothing clear in the MCD Act regarding when by-election should be held.

But under Section 32(8) of the MCD Act, the councilor has to resign within 14

days of becoming an MLA or MP.

Kamaljeet Sehrawat, who

became Member of Parliament by resigning from the membership of the

corporation, had given up his membership in May 2024, but the by-election has

not been conducted in his ward yet. According to sources, there is no talk

regarding whether the Election Commission is able to conduct elections within

six months or not.
