Kolkata, 4 December (H.S.) : The controversy surrounding Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir intensified on Thursday as a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Calcutta High Court challenging his announcement to construct a Babri Masjid in Murshidabad. The petition, filed by advocate Sabyasachi Chakraborty, argues that the MLA’s declaration violates constitutional principles and could disturb communal harmony.

A division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul granted permission to file the PIL under procedural rules. While a date of hearing has not yet been fixed, the matter is expected to come up for consideration soon.

Advocate Chakraborty stated that Kabir’s statements were provocative in nature and urged the court to intervene to prevent potential communal tension. The petition seeks judicial action against the MLA’s remarks as well as directions to maintain law and order.

The controversy began after Kabir announced plans to construct a Babri Masjid at Beldanga in Murshidabad on 6 December, claiming that land had already been prepared for the project. The declaration sparked widespread criticism, prompting the Trinamool Congress leadership to distance itself from him.

On Thursday, the party formally suspended Humayun Kabir on grounds of indiscipline. Addressing a press conference earlier in the day, senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim made it clear that the party would no longer be associated with the Bharatpur MLA.

With the issue now before the High Court, all eyes are on the judicial proceedings and the direction the case may take in the coming days.
