Guwahati, 04 December (HS): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a significant technological upgrade with the successful commissioning of a modern Electronic Interlocking (EI) system at Dumdangi (DMZ) in North Dinajpur district. The newly installed Siemens MK-II EI system replaces the earlier Panel Interlocking setup, enhancing safety, reliability and overall signalling efficiency in train operations.
According to NFR, the advanced EI system offers improved automation and digitally controlled signalling, enabling smoother and safer train movement. The upgraded infrastructure includes independent and dummy shunt signals, reinforced level crossing systems and enhanced digital monitoring capabilities. The system covers 45 routes, 33 track circuits, 9 main signals, 8 independent shunt signals, 2 dummy shunt signals, 16 points, 2 vital FNmux units and 2 non-vital mux units for auto-section display.
According to the NF Railway Chief Public Relation Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma as part of the modernization drive, Manually Lifted Barriers at level crossing gates NC-26, NC-29 and NC-31 have been replaced with Electrically Lifted Barriers to improve safety standards and operational convenience.
Following the commissioning, train operations resumed seamlessly. The first train to pass through the upgraded section was the 12345 Up Saraighat Express at 01:32 hrs on 3 December, followed shortly by the 15648 DN Mumbai LTT Express at 01:34 hrs, confirming the flawless functioning of the new system.
CPRO stated that this successful commissioning marks a major step toward safer, digitally driven and more reliable railway operations, reaffirming its commitment to continuous modernization and improved passenger and freight services.
