Guwahati, 04 December (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday extended warm greetings to the people of the state on the occasion of the traditional Mahohou or Mahkheda festival, celebrated with great enthusiasm across the riverine belt of lower Assam.

In a social media message, the Chief Minister highlighted Assam’s rich cultural heritage, noting that the state is adorned with vibrant customs and age-old folk traditions. He said the Mahohou festival, observed on the full moon night of the month of Aghon, reflects the deep-rooted connection of rural communities with their land, beliefs and collective joy.

Dr Sarma mentioned that during this festival, villagers—especially youths—perform the unique ritual of Mahkheda, where they walk around courtyards with bamboo sticks, sing traditional songs and offer blessings for the wellbeing and prosperity of households. According to local belief, this ritual helps ward off harmful insects and ensures better times ahead.

The Chief Minister conveyed his best wishes to all celebrating the festival and prayed for the peace, progress and welfare of every family in the state.---------
