Hooghly, 31 December (H.S.): The body of a man was found hanging in Saptagram area of Hooghly district in West Bengal on Tuesday night. According to police sources, the deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Swapan Bagdi.

His family alleged that Swapan Bagdi was under immense stress after being summoned for the SIR hearing. They claimed that this mental pressure led him to take this extreme step.

As per information, Swapan Bagdi was a voter at booth number 78 in the Tisbigha area of Saptagram Gram Panchayat, under Saptagram assembly constituency. He was a daily wage laborer and was struggling to support his family due to severe financial difficulties.

The deceased's wife, Pratima Bagdi, said that the BLO (Booth Level Officer) had called her husband to appear for the SIR hearing, but he did not have any necessary documents other than his voter ID card. According to Pratima Bagdi, He was very nervous after receiving the call. He would become silent or angry over trivial matters. This incident happened on Tuesday night.

After receiving news of the incident, the local Trinamool Congress leadership came forward to support the deceased's family. On Wednesday, former MLA and current Zilla Parishad member Manas Majumdar visited the Tisbigha area, met with the family, and assured them of all possible assistance.

Manas Majumdar said that Swapan Bagdi had been living with his family along the railway tracks for a long time and did not possess the necessary documents. He alleged that no written notice was given; he was only summoned by phone for the hearing, which caused Swapan to experience mental distress.

Local Trinamool leaders have also raised questions about the Election Commission regarding this incident. They allege that the hasty implementation of the SIR process is causing hardship to poor and helpless people, and the commission should be held responsible for this incident.

The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and have launched an investigation into the entire matter.
