SIR upsets Bengal’s electoral map: Massive irregularities surface overnight

Kolkata, 3 December (H.S.): The number of names being removed from the electoral rolls in West Bengal during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by the Election Commission is rapidly increasing. According to the latest digitization trends, a total of 4.63 million names have been marked so far. This figure is based on completed digitization forms by Tuesday evening, compared to 4.35 million by Monday evening. This means that 270,000 new names have been added to the list in just 24 hours, potentially subject to deletion.

According to sources in the Chief Electoral Officer's office, 2.22 million names fall under the dead voter category as of Tuesday evening. Another 6.40 million voters have been declared untraceable because booth-level officers (BLOs) were unable to deliver their forms despite repeated attempts.

In addition, 1.622 million people have been identified as migrated voters, who have been confirmed to have permanently relocated due to marriage, employment, or other reasons. Additionally, 1.05 lakh names have been found that are considered duplicate voters, meaning those whose names are listed in two places simultaneously.

According to the voter list prepared as of October 27, there are a total of 76.637 thousand 529 registered voters in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission reported on Tuesday evening that the number of booths in the state that do not have a single dead, duplicate, or transferred voter has changed drastically in just 24 hours. The number of such booths was 2,208 on Monday, but after seeking reports from district magistrates, this number dropped to just 480 on Tuesday.

The Commission has sought detailed reports from district election officers on this unusual situation and is closely monitoring the special revision process.
