Chennai, 3 December (H.S.) : In a social media post recalling his recent visit to Coimbatore for the South India Natural Farming Summit 2025 on November 19, the Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of shifting away from the over-reliance on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, which he noted has negatively impacted soil fertility and sustainability while simultaneously raising farming costs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed his appeal for the adoption of natural farming across India, urging farmers to implement the practice using the mantra of 'one acre, one season.'
Modi explained that natural farming is a method that integrates India's traditional knowledge with modern ecological principles, allowing crops to be cultivated without synthetic chemicals.
The approach promotes diversified fields, the co-existence of livestock, and relies on natural inputs like Panchagavya, Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, and mulching to enhance soil health and resilience against erratic weather.
He encouraged farmers to start with a small plot, suggesting that the positive outcomes would build confidence and inspire wider adoption.
The Prime Minister spoke of his interaction with farmers at the summit, expressing his amazement at meeting individuals from diverse backgrounds—including scientists, first-generation graduates, and those who left high-paying corporate jobs—all dedicated to natural farming.
He cited examples, such as a farmer successfully managing nearly 10 acres of multi-layered agriculture and another preserving native rice varieties like Mapillai Samba and Karuppu Kavuni.
Modi also lauded the Central government’s efforts, including the National Mission on Natural Farming, the expansion of institutional credit through the Kisan Credit Card (KCC), and the PM-Kisan initiative, all of which support this shift towards sustainable agriculture.
He concluded by urging citizens to explore startups in the natural farming sector and engage with Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs).
