Kolkata, 3 December (H.S.):
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has completed its probe into the financial corruption case at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, agency sources confirmed on Wednesday. The additional chargesheet filed earlier this week has been described as the “final chargesheet” in the case. All relevant documents have been submitted before the court.
During Wednesday’s hearing, the Special CBI Court observed that since the trial had already begun after the acceptance of the initial chargesheet, there was no obstacle to accepting an additional chargesheet under the same legal provisions. Following this, the court is set to issue summons to the two individuals newly named in the supplementary chargesheet.
According to the CBI, the investigation revealed that then Principal Sandip Ghosh and then Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali were initially involved in the financial irregularities. Notably, Akhtar Ali was the first to level corruption allegations against Sandip Ghosh, but his name now figures in the final chargesheet as well. A new accused, Shashikant Chandak, has also been added.
The court has directed that a summons be issued to Akhtar Ali for appearance on December 16. Summons will also be sent to Chandak.
Earlier, chargesheets had been filed against Sandip Ghosh, Biplab Singh, Suman Hazra, Afsar Ali Khan and Ashish Pandey. All of them were arrested during the course of the investigation.
