Cyclone Ditwah Triggers Red Alerts, Pounds Tamil Nadu Coast Ahead of Expected Landfall

Chennai, 3 December (H.S.) : Recording two sources, the AIADMK member I.S. Inbadurai raised an alarm in the Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour on Wednesday, highlighting the devastating effect of Cyclone Ditwah and the subsequent monsoon rains on farmers across Tamil Nadu.

The parliamentarian urgently called upon the Central government to dispatch an immediate assessment team to the state, citing that thousands of acres of agricultural land remain submerged, with some areas under two feet of water even after more than ten days.

The natural disaster has reportedly ravaged key crops, including paddy, banana, sugarcane, and betel across the delta region. Inbadurai specifically noted that paddy cultivation in Tenkashi and Ramanathapuram within the Tirunelveli district is completely underwater, threatening the livelihoods of thousands of farming families.

He criticized the state government, echoing former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami's past demands for digging canals and ponds before the monsoon, alleging that the failure to do so led to the current disaster.

Furthermore, the MP pointed out significant administrative hurdles, noting that thousands of farmers are unable to access crop insurance because the title deeds for their ancestral lands are often outdated or still registered in the names of deceased family members.

Inbadurai concluded by demanding that the central government ensure timely and adequate compensation is delivered to the state's farming community following the catastrophic crop losses.
