Chennai, 25 December (H.S.): A woman functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, identified as Ajitha Agnel, allegedly attempted to end her life on Thursday after her name was missing from the newly announced list of party office bearers.
Ajitha Agnel, a resident of Thoothukudi, was reportedly distressed when she was not appointed as the central district secretary for her region. The party president and actor Vijay had released the organizational list on Tuesday, appointing several other individuals to key district positions. Following the announcement, she is currently undergoing medical treatment at a private hospital.
The incident occurred after the party leadership distributed appointment certificates to the new office bearers at the headquarters in Panaiyur. Believing she would be chosen for the central district secretary post, Ajitha Agnel staged a protest at the party office upon learning that someone else had been appointed.
Along with her supporters, she reportedly blocked the car of the party leader, leading to a brief period of tension at the venue. Security personnel and other party functionaries eventually intervened to clear the protesters and ensure the leader's safe entry into the office building.
Despite the initial protest being cleared, Ajitha Agnel continued a sit-in demonstration at the entrance of the headquarters. Although she and her supporters dispersed following talks with party seniors, she later allegedly consumed an overdose of sleeping pills. When her health condition deteriorated, she was rushed to the hospital for emergency care.
Party authorities have noted the incident, while Ajitha had previously shared on social media that her political loyalty would remain with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam until her last breath. Hospital sources indicate that she is being monitored closely by medical professionals.
