Chennai, 25 December (H.S.) : The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has announced a state-wide synchronised bird census scheduled to commence on December 27. This initiative aims to document the population and diversity of avian species across various wetlands and forest regions in the state.

The department has officially invited volunteers, bird enthusiasts, and college students to participate in this extensive exercise. Authorities stated that the data collected during this two-day census would be crucial for formulating better conservation strategies and monitoring the health of local ecosystems.

In a separate development, the state government has issued a high alert for avian influenza along the border districts with Kerala. The Animal Husbandry Department has stepped up its vigil and established temporary check posts to monitor the movement of poultry.

Officials mentioned that while no cases have been reported in Tamil Nadu yet, these preventive measures are essential to safeguard the local poultry industry and public health. Simultaneously, administrative changes were noted as the government promoted Finance Secretary T Udhayachandran and six other senior officers to the rank of Additional Chief Secretary.

Political activity also gained momentum as Chief Minister MK Stalin strongly condemned recent incidents of violence against minorities, stating that such attacks are unacceptable in a secular society. Additionally, a ban on drones has been implemented in Kallakurichi ahead of the Chief Minister's scheduled visit.

Meanwhile, DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth clarified that her party would make its own decisions regarding political alliances, dismissing current media speculations. In the judicial sector, the Madras High Court has issued strict orders for the immediate removal of encroachments from the Vannan Kulam water body to restore its original capacity.
