Guwahati, 25 December (HS): A political controversy erupted in Assam after a Congress spokesperson demanded reservation of 48 out of 126 Assembly constituencies for Miya Muslims. The Assam Pradesh BJP strongly condemned the demand, calling it a calculated conspiracy against the state’s indigenous communities.

In a statement, BJP spokesperson Kamal Kumar Medhi accused the Congress, under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, of reviving what he termed an agenda of Islamist fundamentalism. He alleged that the Congress’ silence on the statement amounted to tacit approval and warned that such moves threaten Assam’s social harmony and identity.

The BJP asserted that the Assamese people would remain united and firmly resist any attempt to undermine the state’s indigenous character.----------
