Chennai, 22 December (H.S.) : The city police arrested a twenty-seven-year-old physiotherapist for allegedly drugging and raping a twenty-year-old woman who was working as an intern at his clinic. The accused, identified as Karthikeyan, operates a physiotherapy centre in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Saturday when the accused took the intern to his apartment in Kolathur under the pretext of attending to an emergency medical case. The victim, who is a student at a private college, had been interning at the facility for the past few months.

Investigations revealed that the accused allegedly spiked the victim's soft drink, leading to her losing consciousness before the assault took place. Upon regaining consciousness and realizing she had been sexually assaulted, the woman immediately informed her parents about the ordeal.

Following her disclosure, a formal complaint was lodged at the Kolathur All Women Police Station. The authorities acted swiftly on the complaint and took the physiotherapist into custody for further interrogation regarding the serious allegations leveled against him.

A senior police official confirmed that after preliminary inquiries, Karthikeyan was arrested and produced before a magistrate. He has since been remanded in judicial custody as the legal proceedings continue. The police are currently gathering more evidence and medical reports to strengthen the case.

This incident has caused significant concern among the local community regarding the safety of women in professional and educational internships, prompting calls for stricter monitoring of such private medical practices and clinical environments.
