Chennai, 21 December (H.S.) : The Railway Police at Rameswaram Railway Station recovered ten kg of cannabis hidden in an unclaimed bag inside a coach of the Bhubaneswar Express on Sunday.
The seizure occurred during a routine security inspection of the train, which had arrived at the station at approximately one am. Officers discovered the suspicious bag placed in one of the unreserved compartments and proceeded to inspect its contents, leading to the discovery of the illegal substance.
Upon further examination, the police found five neatly wrapped packets of cannabis, a substance strictly banned by the Tamil Nadu government. While the exact market value of the seized contraband has not been specified, authorities have taken the material into custody for further processing.
Initial reports suggest that the bag was left behind by an unidentified individual, and police are currently analyzing surveillance footage and passenger logs to identify potential suspects who may have been transporting the narcotics.
The incident is currently under detailed investigation as the Railway Police seek to determine the origin and intended destination of the shipment. Local authorities have intensified vigil at the station and on long distance trains following this discovery.
This seizure underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Tamil Nadu to curb the trafficking of illegal substances through the railway network.
No arrests have been made so far in connection with this specific case, but officials have registered a formal complaint and are coordinating with other departments for a wider probe.
