
Charaidev (Assam), 02 December (HS): Marking the historic occasion of Assam Day, the Tai Ahom Development Council, in collaboration with the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (Nazira Subdivision Committee), organised the unveiling of a newly constructed statue of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha at Nazira Chariali. The ceremony was inaugurated by Assam Water Resources, Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika.
The event began with a traditional Banfi Puja performed by 200 Moolong participants, followed by a cultural procession from the statue site to the Nazira playground.
To commemorate the day, a public meeting was also organised at the Nazira playground by the Cultural Affairs Department and the Tai Ahom Development Council, with support from the Sivasagar district administration and AASU Nazira Subdivision Committee. The programme featured Aising Lao by 200 Tai artistes, followed by Assamese musical presentations and group performances by local artists.
Speakers at the event described Sukapha as the creator and visionary architect of the Assamese nation. They highlighted the golden 600-year Ahom rule and emphasised that Sukapha united diverse communities through social harmony, cultural integration and a forward-looking administrative philosophy that shaped a composite Assamese identity.
The event was graced by Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprises Minister Bimal Borah as chief guest. Hill Areas, Cooperation Minister Jogen Mohan and Water Resources, Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika attended as distinguished guests. Also present were Tai Ahom Development Council Chairperson Mayur Borgohain; MLAs Dharmeswar Konwar (Sonari), Chakradhar Gogoi (Moran), Pradip Hazarika (Amguri) and Sushanta Buragohain (Thawra), along with Cultural Affairs Director Rahul Das, Assam Tea Corporation Chairperson Shivaprasad Bhadra, social workers Bitupan Raidihingia and Mridul Mahanta and other notable personalities.
Golaghat’s Hemaprabha Borbora Girls’ College retired principal Dr Bontirani Gogoi participated as a keynote speaker. During the programme, the Tai Ahom Development Council extended financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to the family of the late folk artist Damchao Rajiv Shadiya.----------
