Compensation announced for 39 ‘SIR fear’ deaths in Bengal


Kolkata, 2 December (H.S.): West Bengal government has become active in addressing the cases of deaths and suicides due to fear of SIR in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Tuesday that financial assistance will be provided to the families of those who died or committed suicide due to fear of SIR. Additionally, financial assistance will also be provided to those who fell ill due to the stress and fear of SIR.

The Chief Minister stated that a total of 39 people have died due to fear of SIR in the state so far, including suicides. Mamata Banerjee said, The government will provide financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakh to the families of all these deceased individuals.

As per information, 13 people are hospitalized due to SIR stress. These 13 include three booth-level officers who reportedly suffered from work pressure. They will each receive financial assistance of Rs. 1 lakh.

So far, four BLOs have died due to work pressure in the state. The Chief Minister stated that the government has already provided assistance of ₹2 lakh each to the families of two of the deceased BLOs.

The SIR process began in West Bengal on October 28th. Pradeep Kar, a resident of Khardah in North 24 Parganas, committed suicide that same day.

According to the Chief Minister, a total of 39 people have died during the process of filling and submitting enumeration forms. Sources indicate that approximately half of these deaths were suicides, while the rest died of heart attacks and strokes.

The continued deaths and suicides related to SIR have increased political tension in the state. The government is providing relief and assistance in this matter.
