Rail Minister Lauds Tank Container Innovation Boosting Freight Capacity by 19%


New Delhi, 13 December (H.S.): Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw commended an innovative redesign of tank containers on Saturday during a review meeting at Rail Bhavan, highlighting its potential to make Indian Railways' freight operations more competitive and customer-centric.The enhanced 20-foot tank containers, developed by Indian Railways and Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), now boast a loading capacity increased from 26 metric tonnes to 31 metric tonnes — a 19% improvement achieved through design and height modifications.Successful trials have been completed, with production of the high-capacity units now underway.

Vaishnaw emphasized fostering such technological advancements alongside policy restructuring and flexible pricing to attract more freight customers. He directed officials to pursue additional innovations that enhance cargo efficiency across the network.

Railway Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu also attended the meeting, which focused on innovation promotion and operational improvements in freight services.
