Chennai, 11 December (H.S.) : Thoothukudi Airport, also known as Vagaikulam Airport, has completed all necessary upgrades requested by IndiGo airline, preparing it to handle larger aircraft and facilitate round-the-clock operations.
This significant enhancement paves the way for the potential introduction of direct flight services to major metropolitan areas, including New Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, which are anticipated to commence soon.
The airport is now equipped to manage the logistical demands of expanded air traffic, representing a major boost to connectivity for southern Tamil Nadu.
According to media reports, airport director Anoop confirmed that the facility is fully operational and prepared for the proposed expansion. Anoop stated, following a comprehensive inspection of the development works at the airport on Wednesday, that the airport is fully geared up.
He explicitly mentioned the readiness to handle the additional workforce required to manage the proposed larger aircraft on the Thoothukudi to Delhi and Thoothukudi to Mumbai routes.
The official confirmed that the onus is now on the airline operator to formally begin the services with larger planes and introduce night-time flights from Thoothukudi.
Currently, the airport operates daily services to Chennai and Bengaluru. However, a recent update indicates that the Chennai service has been temporarily cancelled due to disruptions faced by IndiGo, with passengers who had pre-booked tickets being issued refunds.
The commencement of night services, once adequate manpower and security arrangements are permanently deployed, is expected to greatly benefit travelers from nearby districts such as Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari.
The introduction of direct flights to key business and travel hubs is set to substantially improve access to the region.
