Kolkata, 13 December (H.S.): BJP leader and social media in charge Amit Malviya, in a post on X on Saturday, accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government of a complete failure to control air pollution. He said that Kolkata, like Delhi-NCR, is grappling with severe air pollution, but there is no excuse for it.
Malviya wrote in his post that the NCR is not alone; Kolkata is also suffocating from pollution. Despite the absence of seasonal stubble burning in West Bengal, Kolkata continues to face a severe clean air crisis. This highlights a deep-seated, year-round problem of poor urban planning, dust from uncontrolled construction, vehicular pollution, industrial emissions, and weak enforcement of environmental standards.
The BJP leader, calling the issue a public health emergency, said that air pollution is not a seasonal inconvenience but a serious public health crisis. When a city like Kolkata struggles with dangerous air quality without the excuse of external factors, it clearly demonstrates the government's continued failure.
Malviya sharply criticized Mamata Banerjee's administration, saying that this problem should be added to her government's long list of failures. He alleged that environmental governance has been completely neglected under Mamata Banerjee's administration. Malviya said that citizens deserve clean air, accountable leadership, and decisive action, not just excuses.
This post comes at a time when the national capital, Delhi, and the NCR region are also grappling with severe air pollution. However, Malviya clarified that the situation in Kolkata is even more worrying because there is no seasonal cause like stubble burning, yet pollution levels remain dangerous.
