Bhubaneswar, 11 December (H.S.): AIIMS Bhubaneswar has successfully restored mobility to 37-year-old Biswa Bhushan Rout from Kendrapada, who had lived with a severe spinal and hip deformity caused by Ankylosing Spondylitis for nearly 20 years.
Rout’s spine and hips had completely fused, bending his body to almost a 150-degree angle, leaving his chin close to his thighs and making basic activities like walking, sitting, and sleeping extremely difficult. Several hospitals had declined his case due to high surgical risks and cost barriers.
At AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Dr. Deepak Neradi, under the supervision of Orthopaedics HoD Dr. Bishnu Prasad Patro, performed three complex procedures — including bilateral hip replacement and spinal deformity correction — with support from Dr. Gurudip Das. Advanced equipment such as neuromonitoring, bone scalpel, high-speed burr, and a surgical microscope were used, enabled by the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas. The Anaesthesia Department, led by Dr. Satyajeet Mishra, provided critical support.
Post-surgery, Rout can now stand, walk, sit, and look straight ahead, marking a dramatic improvement in his quality of life.
While such surgeries typically cost ₹25–50 lakh in private hospitals, Rout received the treatment free under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. AIIMS Bhubaneswar expressed gratitude to the central and state governments for enabling access to advanced, transformative healthcare.
