Thrissur, 11 Dec (H.S.):

In a touching display of democratic spirit, 111-year-old Janaki — the oldest registered voter in Thrissur district — arrived at the polling booth on Thursday with the same enthusiasm she has carried for decades. A resident of Ward 12 in Chochkerikkunnu, under Puthur panchayat, Janaki once again proved that age is no barrier when it comes to fulfilling one’s civic duty.

According to her family, Janaki has never missed a single election in her lifetime. From the very first vote she cast decades ago to the present day, she has consistently turned up at the booth without fail. Even now, despite her advanced age and diminished hearing ability, her memory remains remarkably sharp. She vividly recalls the voting atmosphere of each era — from the early years of India’s democratic journey to the present political climate.

Janaki, who has seen five generations, had seven children, of whom four are alive today. Her children proudly say that their home has always been an “ideological fort” of the Left. Just a few days ago, Kerala Minister K. Rajan visited their residence to honour Janaki for her unwavering commitment to democracy.

What makes her story even more remarkable is her robust health. Family members say that Janaki has never been hospitalised in her entire life, and she continues to manage most of her daily activities on her own. Apart from a recent difficulty in walking — a natural concern at her age — she has no major health issues.

On polling day, neighbours and local officials watched with admiration as Janaki, supported gently by her family, made her way to the booth, determined to keep her tradition unbroken. Polling officers facilitated her entry and ensured that her voting experience remained smooth and dignified.

Her presence at the booth became a moment of inspiration for younger voters, many of whom paused to take note of her commitment. At a time when voter apathy continues to be debated across the country, Janaki stands as a shining reminder of what democratic participation truly means.

With her 111th year coinciding with yet another election season, Janaki has once again sent out a powerful message — that democracy thrives when every vote counts, and when citizens of all ages step forward to keep its spirit alive.
