Chennai, 1 December (H.S.) : Educational institutions across Chennai and three adjacent districts—Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur—will observe a rain holiday on Tuesday, December 2. The precautionary measure was announced by Chennai District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Jagade and followed by the other districts, in response to torrential rainfall and flooding caused by the remnant deep depression of Cyclone Ditwah.
The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff as heavy showers continue to affect pockets of the region. The intense rainfall has resulted in significant waterlogging across the city, rendering major roads and subways, including key stretches like Sholinganallur–Medavakkam and Manali–Thiruvottiyur, inaccessible and bringing traffic to a standstill. Police have issued advisories, urging residents to avoid non-essential travel.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the deep depression was positioned near the coast and is expected to move slowly north, weakening by the evening. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Tuesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to direct disaster management teams to promptly clear waterlogging and provide emergency support. Essential services, however, are slated to continue normal operations.
