Kolkata, 1 December (H.S.).

Even though December has begun, winter has not fully set in across South Bengal. According to meteorologists, a heavy concentration of moisture over the Bay of Bengal is blocking the inflow of cold winds into the region. The weather office says this moisture is unlikely to clear before the first week of December ends, meaning the region will have to wait at least another week for a sharp drop in temperatures.

Meteorologist Rabindra Goenka said that Kolkata and the rest of South Bengal are currently experiencing mild winter conditions. Night temperatures remain normal or slightly above normal, while daytime temperatures are somewhat lower. He added that night temperatures will begin to fall only after weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal stabilise—likely in the second week of December.

On Monday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of around 18°C and a maximum temperature close to 28°C, the Meteorological Department said. Colder conditions are expected to develop gradually by the end of this week, with a noticeable winter chill likely from next week.
