Kolkata, 1 December (H.S.):TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday sharply countered Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that Parliament is a place for work and not for “drama”. Banerjee said calling genuine questions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise a “drama” is unacceptable, especially when, according to him, forty people have died due to issues linked to the process.
Speaking at the inauguration of a Sevaashray camp in Maheshtala, Banerjee questioned the urgency shown by the Election Commission and demanded answers from the Centre. He alleged that the BJP is dismissing public deaths as “drama” to avoid accountability. He warned that if required, the TMC would challenge the Commission’s actions in court.
The Prime Minister, ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, had remarked that Parliament is meant for legislative work and that sloganeering and theatrics have no place there. His comment triggered strong responses from the Opposition. Along with Banerjee, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Priyanka Gandhi also criticised the Prime Minister’s statement, calling it inappropriate.
