Kolkata, 3 October (H.S.): In a bid to maintain law and order during the Durga Puja festivities, Kolkata Police carried out a major crackdown, arresting 127 people and booking 1,993 others for traffic violations between Maha Navami night and Vijayadashami.
According to police, those arrested faced charges of drunk driving, reckless driving, and disorderly conduct. The bulk of traffic violation cases involved riding without helmets and triple-riding on two-wheelers.
In a statement issued on Friday, Kolkata Police said more than 5,000 personnel and civil defence volunteers were deployed across the city and its adjoining areas to control large festive crowds and ensure public safety.
Police officials stressed that strict enforcement would continue, and action against offenders would not be limited to the festival period.
