Jammu, 09 August (H.S.): Farmers along the banks of the Chenab River in Mutthi Maira village of the Akhnoor Assembly constituency staged a protest over the recurring flood problem and demanded adequate compensation for losses suffered due to flooding. The protest was led by Kisan Congress president Bharat Priye.

Speaking on the occasion, Bharat said that due to the lack of proper channelization of the Chenab River, surrounding areas frequently face flooding during the rainy season. Floodwaters entering farmers' fields destroy crops and, in many cases, wash away fertile agricultural land. This causes significant financial losses to farmers and also destroys months of hard work.

He said that the cost of farming has already been rising steadily and farmers are facing serious economic challenges. In such circumstances, recurring floods further aggravate their difficulties. The affected farmers are also deeply angry over the alleged lack of adequate compensation from the Government for the losses caused by floods.

Bharat demanded that the Government undertake scientific channelization of the Chenab River at the earliest, implement effective flood-control and protective measures, and provide appropriate compensation to farmers for the loss of crops and agricultural land. He said that instead of ignoring the problems faced by farmers, the Government should take concrete and permanent welfare measures.
